Positano Travel Guide

Positano Travel Guide

Hi lovelies,

I’ve been dreaming for a long time about visiting Positano at Amalfi Coast in Italy and finally this dream turned into reality: We just got back after spending five days at this magical place 🙂

Today I wanna tell you about my Impressions there and also give you a few travel tips or rather answer your frequently asked questions:

How do you get to Positano?

The best way to reach Positano is flying to Naples and then renting a car and driving yourself or taking the bus to Positano. From Munich or Frankfurt there are many direct flights each day to Naples which is very convenient. However, the drive from Naples to Positano takes another one or two hours depending on the traffic situation. We flew from Munich directly to Naples, rented a car and drove ourselves from there to Positano. In the end we regretted that a bit. Because first of all the Italians are very chaotic drivers. Secondly, the streets in Positano are very narrow so it is quite stressful driving there. Thirdly, the parking costs in Positano are very high. You can either park in one of the public garages or directly at the hotel. Either way you need to pay for parking between 25 and 30€ each night. This in addition to the renting costs adds up. Therefore, I recommend you to rather take the bus to Positano. In the city there is also a bus which only costs 1.70€ per person. I wish we had known all that beforehand but at least now you guys know 😉

What is your Impression of Positano?

Positano as a place is really stunning! The city seems almost like a painting and it is even more beautiful that in its pictures. However, what lowered our impression of Positano are the tons of tourists there. We visited Positano in October (which is the low season). Despite that during the day the city was just too crowded. The city center is very small and everyone is walking around in the tiny streets or hangs out at the beach. Very nice was the atmosphere early in the morning though before 11 am or in the evening after sunset. There are not many people who actually stay in Positano but a lot of tourists who visit from outside during the day. They get there by bus or via the various huge boats who stop at Positano so there are unfortunately too many visitors in the city during the day.

What we also didn’t like about Positano was the most hotels have a horrible gym or don’t even have one at all. There are tons of steps in Positano therefore most tourists don’t seem to put much necessity into staying active outside of walking so many steps each day 😛 For us this was a big disadvantage though because we couldn’t do weight training for five days 🙁

What we loved about Positano was the amazing Italian food. We had the best pizza of our lives there. Therefore, I made my “pizza diet” and really ate like one pizza each day 😀 Unfortunately this along with the lack of workouts wasn’t ideal 😛

Where should you stay in Positano?

During our five days in Positano we stayed at three different hotels. My favorite one was our first hotel: Hotel Marincanto. The interior of the hotel is stunning, many rooms offer a dream view and the location is also great as it is very close to the beach. Book your stay at the hotel here 🙂

My second favorite hotel was Buca del Bacco. This one is located directly at the beach and the view is breath-taking as you can see the cathedral of Positano from your balcony. The hotel isn’t as luxurious as Hotel Marincanto. However, the rooms are very cozy and offer the most stunning view. Book your stay at the hotel here 🙂

I can recommend our third hotel only to some extent: Hotel Royal Positano. Nevertheless, this was also the by far cheapest one so you may accept the downsides.

What we really liked there was the view from the hotel terrace or from our room which was really beautiful!

However, the location of the hotel isn’t the best as it is a bit outside of the city center but still in Positano.

The biggest disadvantage of the hotel is though that the rooms are quite big but super old school. The entire hotel seems like it needs to be renovated. For such a low price we accepted the downsides though and also didn’t regret that we booked two nights there as it lowered our travel expenses 😛 Book your stay at the hotel here.

How long should I stay in Positano?

In my opinion three nights are totally enough. Positano is quite small so there is not sooo much to see. What is simply breath-taking though is the entire Amalfi Coast. So best is to plan on making a few stops during your stay in Italy such as Praiano, Sorrento, the island Capri etc. In this case it is totally enough to just spend a few days in Positano.

What should I do in Positano?

You should definitely visit the beach, explore the little shops, try out the local Italian cuisine, order a lemon sorbet and do a boat trip. Like mentioned before the entire Amalfi Coast is worth seeing so try to explore that as well 🙂

Do you have some other questions? Or have you already been to Positano?

Xoxo

Almost all restaurants at the beach are very good. Our favorite one was “Incanto” where the serve the best pizza!! “Cafe Positano” was also really good, especially for breakfast or lunch 🙂

Hello from Oslo, Norway! This is a place I have dreamt about for a long time too! But after reading this, I’m wondering if this place is just like Portofino, Italy? You have seen it all in one day, kind of place?

We are going to Positano now in the end of July and I have done a TON of research. I am so happy I found this posts of yours regarding car rental, because that is EXACTLY what we were planning to do, but luckily you saved us lots of money <3

If you go there again you should consider hiking ''the path of Gods'' hike ABOVE Positano. That way you can get lots of training even if there is no gym to use ^_^
