Sustainability by the Example of Six Senses Samui in Koh Samui, Thailand

Do you know what Sustainability means? Its definition is: “Sustainability is the idea that goods and services should be produced in ways that do not use resources that cannot be replaced and that do not damage the environment.”

The hotel chain Six Senses which I was able to experience already twice in the Maldives puts a high emphasis on sustainability and tries to implement this principle in all of their resorts. Here you can read how Six Senses Laamu applies sustainability. Today I wanna talk about how Six Senses Samui implements it. I find that this resort is a real role model in sustainability so many resorts should follow this example ๐Ÿ™‚

1) Natural Villas

I simply love the design of the villas of Six Senses which are always build solely of natural ingredients such as wood or cotton. Our villa atย Six Senses Samui was really beautiful! It had two different floors and offered all that you wish for as a hotel guest being on vacation. On the upper floor there is the bedroom, living- and bathroom and on the lower floor is the terrace and huge pool. We really loved staying here ๐Ÿ™‚

2) A Farm

Which five star hotel has a farm?! At least I haven’t known anyone before and I was really surprised when I discovered the goats, the chicken etc. atย Six Senses Samui. The idea behind it is genious though! Chicken produce eggs which then can be used in the various restaurants. Goats are great processors of organic waste so this problem is solved as well. Furthermore, a farm is especially for kids a true paradise! We immediately fell in love with the cute baby goats. While we stayed at the property a new one was even born ๐Ÿ˜€

3) Organic Food

Most food which is served atย Six Senses Samui has been produced in the own resort. This guarantees not only absolute freshness of the food but also saves ressources.

4) Waste is prevented as much as possible

But also other waste is prevented as much as possible. If there is some than it is organic most of the times. The resort has its own composting plant and other waste facilities. Where other resorts produce tons of trash by handing out little plastic bottles with shampoo etc. to their guests Six Senses Samui has completely abandoned this and uses reusable porcelain bottles instead. This seems little but makes in the sum of a hotel a huge difference.

5) Own produced Water

Six Senses Samui produces their own water. In many hotels a lot of trash is generated by using plastic water bottles. The resort has solved this problem by producing their own water and using glass bottles instead.

Not only because of the real exemplary implementation of sustainability I can really recommend staying at Six Senses Samui! I wanna emphasize that luxury is definitely not abandoned in the hotel and it is absolutely justified that the hotel is a five star hotel! Many people believe that luxury and sustainability are not combinable.ย Six Senses Samui is the perfect example that this is definitely possible ๐Ÿ™‚
